Rooney sides with United fans

Although he never mentions the Glazers by name in the statement he issued today, Wayne Rooney has implicitly taken the side of Manchester United fans who are critical of their regime.  He cites a lack of ambition at the club as the reason he wants to leave and in particular refers to a failure to secure assurances that United would continue to attract the top players in the world.

Earlier the Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST) stated, ‘The question being asked by many fans is does the ambition of the owners match that of Rooney or indeed of Manchester United supporters?   On the evidence so far, the answer would be clearly not.  The contrast could hardly be starker between the owners at Manchester City, who are pumping millions into their club, while the Glazers are leaching huge amounts out of ours.’

With Rooney going and doubts being raised about how long Sir Alex Ferguson will stay, there is a real risk that attendances at Old Trafford could fall below capacity, undermining the club’s financial model.
