Barnet in row over stadium plan

Barnet have threatened to move out of the borough after 100 years following a row with the local council over a potential site for a new stadium.   The club regards their ground at Underhill, which has a slope, as ageing and unsuitable as a basis for future development.

Barnet have threatened to move out of the borough after 100 years following a row with the local council over a potential site for a new stadium.   The club regards their ground at Underhill, which has a slope, as ageing and unsuitable as a basis for future development.

They have had their eye on the Copthall Stadium at Mill Hill for some time, but plans for a 10,000 seater stadium were turned down by the then deputy prime minister John Prescott in 2001.   However, Barnet Council have started discussions with Saracens Rugby Football Club about re-developing the site.  Saracens currently play at Vicarage Road in Watford.

Club chairman Tony Kleanthous described the news as extremely disappointing and a clear message that the council preferred having Saracens in the borough rather than the football club.
