What was seen as a step too far was the Premier League’s plan to stage regular or additional matches round the world. Football may be globalising, but there is also a sense in which it remains intensely local, particularly in terms of where games are played.
Events like the Asia Trophy do, however, enable the Premier League to reach out to the key Asian market.
