There is no credit ratings agency that one can pay a fee to in order to get a financial report on a club, nor is there the equivalent of Moody’s downgrading, say, Plymouth Argyle to C+.   According to Gilbert, players are having to resort to a relatively rough-and-ready method: ‘They will ask lads who they know there or who know about the club if people are getting paid their wages.’
