Coventry are coming home

A statement confirming Coventry City have agreed a deal to return to the Ricoh Arena after more than a year of playing their football in Northampton is expected later this morning, reports the Coventry Evening Telegraph.

A deal for a return has been signed after terms were agreed following secret talks between lawyers acting for club owners Sisu and Ricoh Arena operators ACL. The finer details of the deal are yet to be announced, but sources suggest the club could now return to Coventry by September.

Beckham seeks new stadium site

David Beckham’s acquisition of the MLS Franchise for Miami has been far from plain sailing with continuing difficulties in finding a site for a stadium.   The first location at PortMiami was opposed by a cruise company and waterfront trade unions.   An alternative was opposed by local politicians.

Sisu lose state aid case

Coventry City’s owners, Sisu, have lost their judicial review case which claimed that the City Council’s loan to the Ricoh Arena constituted illegal state aid under European Union rules.   Sisu have stated that they will seek leave to appeal.

The City Council’s case was that once Sisu ceased to make its rent payments it had to make a loan to Arena Coventry Limited (ACL), the operators of the Ricoh, to protect its investment.   It argued that the judicial review formed part of a campaign to ‘distress’ ACL and acquire control of the Ricoh for Sisu.

Glimmer of hope for Sky Blues

A non-executive director of Coventry City has said that he is prepared to consider the offer from the Keep Coventry in Coventry group to pay the rent on the Ricoh Arena for three years so that the club could play there rather than in Northampton.   This would enable a longer-term solution to be found to the bitter dispute.
