Is the price right?

Last Saturday was Non-League Day when some non-league clubs let in Premiership supporters for free and at half price.  But often a non-league ticket costs more than one in the Premiership.  On Saturday you can get a Blackburn v. Fulham ticket for £10 whereas it will cost you £12 to watch a Blue Square North match.

At Wigan a family of four can see Wigan play Sunderland for a total of £25.  A season ticket at the DW Stadium costs from £250 which is what you would have to pay at Bradford City in League Two.  You can pay quite a bit more in League One.

But it can cost a lot more to watch a match at a top Premiership club.   Prices at Spurs have doubled in 13 years.  From January it will cost £50.50 to watch a game from the South Stand Upper Tier at White Hart Lane.  If Arsenal pass on the cost of the VAT rise in January a top-priced general sale ticket for the Emirates will cost more than £100 when booking and postage fees are added.

However, the rate of increase in ticket prices has slowed down.  In 2005-6 the average Premier League adult ticket price was £33.60.  This season it is £36.60, a below inflation increase of 8.9 per cent in five years.

The Premier League points out that last season average crowds were above 90 per cent of stadium capacity for the thirteenth successive year.   Stadium occupancy rates with 92.4 per cent which was slightly up on the season before.

In the Bundesliga you can get tickets for the equivalent of about £12.50 with public transport often included in the price.   In the Premier League going to every game home and away could cost approaching £5,000 in a season when you have added in all the costs.
