Wayne’s image at risk

Allegations about Wayne Rooney’s personal life place at risk a number of lucrative sponsorship deals.  As well as a weekly wage of around £100,000 and £760,000 of image rights earned in twice-yearly payments, Rooney has sponsorship deals with Coca-Cola, Nike and EA sports,  He also has a lucrative five-book deal with Harper Collins.

He would have more sponsorship deals, but at a court hearing earlier this year it was revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson restricted his players to five.

Rooney shared top billing in Nike’s three minute World Cup television advert.   Nike said that the revelations about his personal life were a private manner, as did Coca-Cola.   Sponsors are likely to stick with Rooney, but what is at risk is the joint brand with his wife Coleen which was seen as having similar potential to that of the Beckhams.   She is recognised to have been very astute in building her own image.

The publicity is not good news for the Football Association as it struggles to find new sponsors after the World Cup.   What is effectively its biggest draw has been tarnished.
