Is spending in January good value?

Spending money on players in the January transfer window can make a difference, but it doesn’t offer very good value for money.   That is the conclusion of calculations made by Dr Henry Stott, Dr Mark Latham and Dr Dinesh Valvani.

There is a statistically significant correlation between speding more money and getting more points in the remainder of the season.   For every million pounds spent on rebuilding the squad, a team can expect to obtain an additional 0.0036 points per game.   If a team spent £100m extra, net of sales, on building the squad it would be worth 0.36 points per games or approximately 23 per cent more.

That, of course, could make the difference between staying in the Premier League and enjoying its riches next season, and relegation.
