There is no doubt, however, that England did express concerns about training facilities in particular and this led to the funding boost.   It may not all be spent and one objective is to leave a legacy to develop the sport in South Africa.


South Africa has embarked on such a bold and inspired experiment that it is very difficult to be critical.   Nevertheless, it remains the case that there are deep inequalities in the country which are even apparent next to the new stadiums.   These give rise to social tensions and feed into a high crime rate.  The World Cup is a great opportunity for the country, which is a member of the G-20 group of world political leaders, to project itself on the world stage.
