City to be included in financial fair play trial

Manchester City look set to be one of 20 clubs invited to take part in a trial of the new Uefa financial fair play system.   Andrea Traverso, the Uefa chief responsible for the plan, said at the Soccerex European Forum in Manchester that clubs would be asked to file their present annual accounts to check that they are working in the right direction.

He described this scheme as ‘soft implementation’.   No clubs will be banned from taking part in European competitions before 2014.    However, the data for 2010-11 will give Uefa a benchmark they can use to evaluate subsequent performance.   In 2012 Traverso siad ‘The financial control panel will need to assess whether the club has shown commitment to move in the right direction and have concrete plans to realise the objectives.   If they find the club has done nothing to move in the right direction, they may recommend a harder sanction.’

It will be quite challenging for Manchester City to comply with the rules and it is evident that Uefa do not want to allow them a let out on the grounds of not understanding how they work.
