Football Federation Australia is attempting to boost the A-league by removing the salary cap on a second ‘marquee’ player.   The hope is that it will be possible to attract some of the Soceroos playing in leagues around the world as well as allowing clubs to sign a high-quality overseas player.

However, it is feared that the plan may increase the poverty gap between the more successful clubs and those struggling to make ends meet.   A-league champions Melbourne Victory, who have the league’s biggest fan base and financial stability, are one club who are confident they wull be able to use the new rules to their advantage.   New franchise Melbourne Heart and Sydney FC would be almost certain to take up the option.

However, North Queensland Fury were recently abandoned by their owner and are being kept alive by the league.  Adelaide United is in the pricess of changing owners and the future of Gold Coast United is up in the air as owner Clive Palmer weighs up his options.
