The biggest source of revenue is shirt sponsorship (or jersey sponsorship as this report calls it).   That is followed by stadium naming rights which have become an increasingly lucrative source of revenue.

The wrong choices can, however, be resented by fans.   The attempt to rename St, James’s Park and shirt sponsorship by Wonga add to the sense of resentment and disconnect among Newcastle United fans. In the absence of success on the pitch, they have named the club ‘balance sheet champions of 2013-14.’

Unsurprisingly, Manchester United and Barcelona lead the league for shirt revenue.   Emirates is the only company to sponsor several clubs, spending $130m a year on five teams.
