Manchester United players will be forced to take a pay cut if they do not qualify for the Champions League next season. The players and the coaching staff stand to lose about £14m if they do not finish in the top four of the Barclays Premier League this season. That works out at about £500,000 a player.

Most United players commit to two levels of payment when they sign their contracts. All players receive a standard wage packet when they sign a contract, but if the club qualifies for the Champions League they receive a larger wage packet known as the ‘standard plus’ rate. United introduced the scheme after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, perhaps sensing that Champions League qualification would no longer be assured.
According to the Fink Tank in The Times, United have a slightly better than one in four chance (28 per cent) of playing in the Champions League next season.
