Worcester City face an uncertain future after a plan to turn the club into a community benefit society was rejected by shareholders.   This is something which has helped clubs like FC United and Lewes to attract significant investment.

The board’s position was that the plan would have meant £140,000 of unsold shares being handed over to the Supporters’ Trust for free, something that could have led to a legal challenge from shareholders.

The club has been homeless since their ground was sold to developers in 2013.  The club is currently losing around £120,000 a year and the chairman has admitted that it could fold within three years.

Given its size and relative prosperity, Worcester should be able to support a club in the top flight of the non-league pyramid.   The population is approximately 100,000, although presumably some football fans support Birmingham clubs.
