Unanswered questions at Rangers

Even though American tycoon Bill Miller has been named as the preferred bidder for Rangers, many unanswered questions remain.   A lot of these centre around the continuity of the club, although as far as fans are concerned the historic identity of the club would remain unchanged whatever its legal form.

There is also the question of the attitude of the Scottish football authorities.   They seem to have followed a rule-bound approach, rather than consider what is good for Rangers and the game as a whole in Scotland.

I am strictly neutral in Old Firm matters.   In so far as I follow a Scottish club it is Caly Thistle because that was the part of Scotland my father’s family came from and Clyde because when I was a student in Glasgow I did a project in Cumbernauld.

However from south of the border I do not see how the broader interests of Scottish football would be served by handicapping or weakening Rangers.   Of course serious mistakes have been made and those need to be dealt with but the responsibility lies with the owners not with the fans.

The other issue is how far of a white knight Bill Miller really is.  As has been pointed out, we have been here before.   Is the light at the end of the tunnel really a truck rushing towards us?

One assessment of Bill Miller can be found here although arguably it’s a bit patronising.  It is very easy to portray him as a kind of character out of a Bruce Springstein record, a blue collar numbskull who doesn’t even know where Glasgow is.  He is a very successful self-made businessman.  But he has certainly taken on a tough challenge at Rangers.
