Uefa launches investigation into PSG

Uefa has launched a formal investigation into whether Paris Saint-Germain has breached financial fair play rules following ‘recent transfer activity’.   There has been concern that the effectively state-owned super club has taken financial competition in European football on to a new level.

There are indications that Uefra president Aleksander Ceferin is inclined to take a harder line on such matters than his predecessor Michel Platini.

‘The investigation will focus on the compliance of the club with the break-even requirement, particularly in light of its recent transfer activity,’ a UEFA statement said.   ‘In the coming months, the Investigatory Chamber of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body will regularly meet in order to carefully evaluate all documentation pertaining to this case.

‘UEFA considers Financial Fair Play to be a crucial governance mechanism which aims to ensure the financial sustainability of European club football.’

The maximum punishment would be being barred from the Champions League, although this could not happen this year.  It might be possible in 2018-19.
