Truro may ground share with Argyle

Truro City, who have been through a very troubled period, may have to share with Plymouth Argyle next season. It is stated that the ground share would only be ‘temporary’, although this turns out to mean three years. It would face fans with a 107-mile round trip and take the club that aspires to be Cornwall’s leading football team out of the county and across the River Tamar into Devon.

The club was rescued from liquidation last October by local businessmen Philip Perryman and Pete Masters. The freehold of the Treyew Road ground was sold before they were involved when property developer Kevin Heaney was club chairman. London-based property and development company Helical Bar has an option to purchase the six acre site. They wish to take occupation within a couple of years.

Although Truro are likely to be relegated to the Southern League Premier division next season, there is no nearby ground that would be capable of hosting football at that level. Argyle are themselves at some risk of being relegated to the Conference next season.

Chairman Pete Masters wants Truro to be playing in the Blue Square Premier within five years, carrying the flag of St. Piran across England. This is a more realistic aspiration than Kevin Heaney’s ambition to see them in the Football League.

The long-term hope is that a Stadium for Cornwall would be built at Threemilestone with Helical Bar helping to finance the new ground. Reflecting Cornwall’s strong rugby tradition the ground might well be shared with the Cornish Pirates.
