Transfer spending up but restrained

Spending by Premier League Clubs in the transfer window so far has been about £85m which is three times the level of last year but about the same amount as in 2011.   This suggests that clubs have been relatively restrained despite the pending increase in broadcast income.

The picture could change on the last day, as it did in 2011 when £100m was spent on the last day.  However, just as clubs think that the January transfer window does not offer value and like to get any deals settled relatively early on, any last minute purchases are likely to be panic buys by clubs trying to buy their way out of trouble.   Wind the car window down.
