The Red Sox – an American view

Martin Broughton, the Liverpool chairman, has said that New England Sport Ventures, the potential owners of the club, are an outfit who know the importance of winning on and off the pitch.

It is therefore interesting to quote the views of an American sports journalist of our acquaintance who follows the Red Sox: ‘No question the Red Sox are a cash cow, but ownership knows how to feed it  and get the most return. They also understand that they need to spend to win.  John Henry has a lot of personal wealth. They  won’t spend like the Russians and the Saudis. But they will spend, and they
will  raise prices. They have been very smart with maximizing potential income in Boston.’

He concluded, ‘Liverpool could do much worse. And if they are getting a group that will  run it as a business, they couldn’t get much better. Certainly a much better track record than the Glaziers, Randy Lerner or Hicks/Gillette — and the first  two haven’t done too badly.’
