The dream ends in tears

It’s strange how the prospect of owning a football club can affect someone.  The old joke says that if you want a small fortune, start with a big one and ‘invest’ in a football club.   But it is even possible for you to lose your fortune altogether.

It’s strange how the prospect of owning a football club can affect someone.  The old joke says that if you want a small fortune, start with a big one and ‘invest’ in a football club.   But it is even possible for you to lose your fortune altogether.

Brooks Mileson used the money he had at his disposal (or thought he had) to fund the meteoric rise of Gretna through the Scottish football leagues to the Scottish Premier League.   Unfortunately, the money ran out and the dream turned sour.   The natural base of support for Gretna could not sustain a club of that size.

It turned out that Mileson had assets of £2m and debts of £8m.   Now his former home is being put on the market to raise some money for creditors.
