The cost of a day out at football

A survey by the BBC has shown considerable variation in the cost of a day out at a football match.  There are only 11 out of 104 clubs in England and Scotland where it cost less than £20.  The BBC asked for information about the cheapest ticket, a cup of tea, a programme and a pie.   They did not factor in the cost of travel which is highly variable but very few fans can walk to the ground.

The cheapest day out in the Premier League was at Blackburn Rovers where the cost was £17.50 with tickets on sale for a tenner.    Arsenal has the most expensive pies at £4 and a day out there could set you back £100.   If you fancy a trip to Perth, you can get a pie at St. Johnstone for £1.50 and the programme will cost you £1.

There are, however, enough fans who are prepared to pay for what they perceive as quality.   Arsenal filled 99.4 per cent of the Emirates last season, compared with a 66.9 per cent figure at Wigan (which has under half the capacity).   Blackburn Rovers filled 79.7 per cent of their ground.
