The benefits and costs of a cup run

Luton Town have made £600,000 from their FA Cup run, including a £233,200 broadcast fee from ESPN for their home against Millwall.   However, it simply eats into projected losses of £2m this season as they try to return to the Football League.

They have spent big on their squad.   Indeed, the consortium in charge at Kenilworth Road has already ploughed £10m into the club.   But at the moment they are 8th in the Blue Square Premiership, although they have games in hand on the clubs above them.

Oldham Athletic have also made an estimated £600,000 from their cup run and could make as much as £500,000 from the replay at Everton.   They would have got through the season without the cup run, but it certainly helps.

The club can’t be that well off, however, as players were instructed before the game not to swap their shirts with Everton stars.   Overcome by the emotion of the moment after scoring the last minute equaliser, Matt Smith threw his shirt into the crowd.   The club is now trying to find out which fan has it so that they can get it back.

The challenge facing Oldham is to avoid relegation to League 2 and it is not always easy switching from the glamour of televised appearances to grinding out results in League 1.
