HM Revenue and Customs has brought a winding up petition against Premiership bottom club Portsmouth. The tax authorities applied for the petition just before Christmas, but a full court hearing will not take place until February. Portsmouth is disputing the amount of money owned and has asked for the petition to be withdrawn. The petition is really a shot across the club’s bows, but if it does not sort out its financial affairs by February, it could be the first Premiership club to go into administration.

This would be a considerable embarrassment to the Barclays Premier League who will no doubt do what they can to prevent it happening.
