The latest bid to buy Stockport County, bottom of League 1 and in administration, has been rejected by the Football League. A bid had been submitted by a consortium led by former Manchester City striker, Jim Melrose. In a statement the administrators said. ‘We understand that certain items of required information are still outstanding. We remain hopeful that the Melrose Consortium can still progress their interest. The administrators have made every effort to secure a sale but the current economic climate combined with the requirements of the Football League membership criteria have made this process extremely difficult.’
It is always challenging being a lower league team on the outskirts of Manchester with two leading Premiership clubs. Fans fear that the club is on the brink of extinction and some have argued that the best way forward might be to have a fresh start outside the Football League, letting go of Edgeley Park which they don’t own and can’t use to secure an overdraft. There is also disappointment at what fans sees as a lack of support from the local council.
