The 2010/11 season saw Serie B club Associazione Calcio Ancona go bankrupt and then liquidated. Amateur side S.S. Piano San Lazzaro then became the main football club in the city, so with the blessing of the Mayor and a majority of Ancona supporters, the club changed their denomination to U.S. Ancona 1905. Another Serie B club, Mantova FC also went bankrupt the same season but was re-constituted and admitted to Serie D.
