Should January transfer window go?

There have been calls for the winter transfer window to be scrapped because of its distorting effect on the market.  Richard Bevan, chief executive of the League Managers’ Association said in the transcript of an interview to be shown on BBC Midlands Late Kick Off show tonight, ‘It doesn’t create stability and it doesn’t create a level playing field and certainly in the Football Leafue they are very keen that the domestic window to be scrapped.’

The window is certainly destabilising as agents, one of the main beneficiaries use the media to drum up trade.   As soon as the summer window closes, the speculation begins.   Of course, any decision would have to be taken by Fifa and the transfer window system has its origins in a competition policy deal done with the European Union.

It’s evident that many fans are upset about particular decision.   The shirt of Fernando Torres was burnt by some Liverpool fans.   The sale of Andy Carroll may be a financial boost for Newcastle United, but that is not the prime concern of fans as Alan Shearer pointed out on Radio 5 this morning.  Sunderland fans renewed their season tickets on the assumption that Darren Bent would be with them for the whole season.

Clubs do, however, the chance to rectify errors made in the summer.   Given what is at stake in terms of a Champions League place or even avoiding relegation, they are likely to be reluctant to se the window go.
