Americans who follow baseball or American football or even the MLS are often baffled by the idea of promotion and relegation. As far as they are concerned there are major league and minor league clubs and that’s it, although admittedly the MLS has expanded through the admission of new clubs. Of course, franchises can shift from one part of the country to another.

Several foreign owners in the Premier League would like to get rid of relegation, presumably to protect the value of their assets. At least that is what League Managers Association chief Richard Bevan is saying, although he may have his own agenda.
Just under half the Premier League clubs are in foreign ownership, but 14 clubs would have to approve such a change. Even if it was passed, which is unlikely, it could be vetoed by the Football Association.
I don’t see such a move happening. What could happen in time is a reduction of the league to 18 clubs and a reduction in the number of clubs relegated to just two.
