Portsmouth lose Europe spot

The football authorities have refused Portsmouth a Uefa license for next season that would have enabled them to compete in the Europa League.   The place will now go to the team that finishes 7th in the Premier League.   Consideration is being given to a legal challenge but it would be difficult to argue that the decision was unreasonable or that procedures had not been followed.

The Europa League is not much of a money spinner unless one gets to the final stages, but it would have given a boost to the morale of Portsmouth fans who think that it would be a deserved reward for their cup exploits against the odds.   What the club really needs to focus on is getting a buyer so that they can enter a CVA otherwise they will face another points deduction next season and a possible Leeds-like plunge to League 1.
