Pompey remain in peril

Portsmouth are renowned for their dedicated fans who will sing through any adversity.   Recently they have been singing about going on a League 1 tour which includes the possibiliity of getting soaked in the uncovered away end at Yeovil.

Even that would not dampen their spirits, but there is a real risk that the Pompey chimes may ring out no more, at least in the Football League.   Earlier this week the chairman of the Football League said that he thought they could go into liquidation.

Administrator Trevor Birch puts the prospects of survival at 50/50.  He is talking to two interested parties, but they have not made an offer or produced proof of funds.  Some Portsmouth supporters hope that a white knight will still appear, but the number of prospective buyers of clubs has diminished and there are prospects available with less debt to clear.

Former owner Balram Chainrai is owed £18.6m and may therefore have an interest in staging a rescue. That would not be popular with most fans, but it would be better than oblivion.

The club has enough cash to last until June.   The difficulty is that if it goes out of business at that stage, it would be difficult to get a phoenix club accepted in the non-league pyramid for next season.
