‘Pay Up Or Shut Up’ Says Ashley

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has effectively told Tyneside businessman Barry Moat to put up the money to buy the club or shut up. Ashley commented, ‘Barry Moat has been driving me mad for two years.’ Ashley has slashed the asking price from £100m to £80m, but has told Moat to come up with the money within a week. Moat wants to pay £40m now and £40m at the end of the season.

Ashley commented, ‘Barry Moat has been driving me mad for two years.’ Ashley has slashed the asking price from £100m to £80m, but has told Moat to come up with the money within a week. Moat wants to pay £40m now and £40m at the end of the season. Ashley’s response was that he had to put £20m a year into the club and ‘If you can’t pay upfront to buy the club, you can’t afford it.’ With Newcastle’s promotion bid suffering a setback after yesterday’s defeat at Forest, the continuing uncertainty about the club’s future may be having an effect on the pitch.
