Managerial turnover

The sacking of Paulo Sousa by Leicester City after just nine games in charge reflects special conditions at the Foxes, but also illustrates a more general issue.   Leicester City has had 14 managers since 2004.

For current owner Milan Mandaric it will be his ninth managerial appointment in three years.  As chairman of Portsmouth, Mandaric appointed nine managers in eight years.   Leicester are currently in the middle of a change of ownership, with the Football League preparing to approve the takeover by Thai-based Asia Football Investments.

Baggies top financial fair play league

West Bromwich Albion are the new leaders of the Financial Fair Play League run by The Times.   Placings are based on a combination of performance on the pitch and financial conduct.   The formula was devised by Sue Bridgewater of Warwick University. The Baggies gained seven points in September allied with relatively prudent spending on wages and transfer fees.  Blackpool are in second place, followed by Arsenal and then Fulham.

Blades cautiously optimistic

While Sheffield Wednesday fight off the threat of administration, the mood across the city at Sheffield United is one of cautious optimism.   Talks are in progress with a potential Malaysian investor who would join the board, although it is emphasised that this would not be a ‘splash the cash’ deal.

Owls back in court

Sheffield Wednesday is facing a winding up order for the third time in three months.   They have to appear in court on November 17th over a tax debt.   The club has debts of over £20m and estimates that it has lost 20 per cent of its revenue as a result of relegation to League 1.
