Gibraltar’s stadium dilemma

Gibraltar’s international team scored their first goal in an international competition against Scotland yesterday. A policeman scored the goal.

Gibraltar is the fifth oldest football association in the world, founded in 1895. They have more than 2,600 registered players, 8 per cent of the national population. There is an artificial surface at the 2,400 capacity Victoria Stadium, which hosts all games in the national league (two divisions plus reserves), plus youth matches and training sessions.

There is nothing unusual in new sports stadiums behind schedule and over budget. However, the Zenit Arena which is being built in St. Petersburg for the 2018 World Cup in Russia appears to be in a class of its own. It is seven years behind schedule and the cost is likely to be at least €1bn compared with an original estimate of €190m.

The revenue of clubs is hit badly while they have to try and adjust their budgets. Hereford United went under and are being reborn as a phoenix club.

Financial fair play boosts the super clubs

Policy analysts know that one of the many causes of governance failure is that policies can have unintended effects. So it has proved with Uefa’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) scheme.

It has boosted the super clubs that form Europe’s elite which is why they did not oppose the measure. It is now more difficult for a benefactor to boost a club just outside the top level like Manchester City or Paris Saint Germain. They have been penalised under the FFP regulations for daring to break into the cartel.

There was a record attendance of 4,126 at the Silverlake Stadium, Eastleigh for the visit of Macclesfield Town last Saturday. The BT cameras were also present for a live screening of the game. Eastleigh won 4-0 and are just outside the play off places in the Conference.

Phoenix club should soon get keys to Edgar Street

Phoenix club Hereford FC may have to wait a couple of weeks before they get the keys to the Edgar Street ground of former club Hereford United. They were wound up in December after failing to pay debts of £1m. Electrical safety tests have to be carried out and there are burst pipes and other issues to be attended to.

More ticket price rises on the way at Liverpool

It looks as if more ticket price rises are on the way at Liverpool to help pay for the redevelopment of the main stand. Providing more capacity, and in particular more hospitality suites, is seen as crucial to the club’s continued ability to compete at the top level. Good progress is being made in finding a sponsor for the stand.

Truro revive Football League dream

Truro City consider that their dream of bringing the Football League will come nearer realisation if the local council approves plans for a new £10m 6,000 seater stadium next month. The stadium would be shared with rugby side Cornish Pirates and local colleges. 574 attended Truro’s home game yesterday.

Truro aimed for the Football League under the high spending regime of Kevin Heaney, but ended up in financial trouble and had to be rescued.
