Lincoln City have found it a struggle. The club has the rather unfortunate record of having suffered five demotions from the Football League. In the past they have always bounced straight back again, but not since 2011. They are currently 12th out of 24 in the Vanarama Conference.
The city and the area are not that prosperous and it is surrounded by intensively farmed but relatively sparsely populated countryside. Communication links are not good. As in many cities (think Plymouth), the success of the university has been a boost, but not many students support the local club.
New stadium plans, possibly as part of a sports village complex, could give the Imps a much needed boost.
