Nike aim to make football their biggest money-making sport, overtaking the revenues they have obtained from basketball and running.   Football is already Nike’s number one sport outside the US, although there are also significant sales within the US.   It purchased UK-based football kit manufacturer Umbro in 2008, and next year begins an eight-year deal with the French Football Federation as the official supplier of the national team, replacing Adidas.

In the context of the World Cup, Nike is in a head-to-head contest with Adidas which is the market share leader in football-related products.   Nike is sposnoring 10 teams in the World Cup, inc luding Brazil, Portugal and Hplland.   However, Adidas will be able to dominate the advertising space ahead of and during the tournament as an offiicial Fifa sponsor.    Adidas is sponsoring no less than 12 teams and providing match balls and kit for team officials.   It will continue as official sponsor for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
