New bid for Charlton

A new prospective purchaser for Charlton Athletic has appeared on the scene, reports fanzine Voice of the Valley.   It is being fronted by former Addicks defender Paul Elliott who is a regular in the directors’ box at home matches.

An earlier approach fronted by former Addicks chief executive Peter Varney was rebuffed by the club. However, the club has been more responsive to this bid.

However, Belgian owner Roland Duchatelet is asking for an unrealistic £38m, according to fanzine editor Rick Everitt.   This is the same as the amount owed by Charlton’s holding company Baton 2010 to Duchatelet’s Staprix.

The club changed hands for £18m in January 2014 and is now on the brink of relegation to League One. There are also £7m of loans outstanding to pre-2010 members of the board which they would be entitled to have repaid if there was a change of control.

By way of comparison, Wolverhampton Wanderers have attracted no offers all season at a price reported to be £25m.
