South-East London club Charlton Athletic have already been relegated to League 1, but now there is a news of a possible bid which could revive their fortunes. Normally reliable sources are indicating that former chief executive Peter Varney, a popular figure at The Valley, has put together a consortium of wealthy businessmen who are willing to buy the club. Varney has not denied the reports. Current chairman Richard Murray has emphasised that money is available to keep the club in business after shareholders approved the sale and lease back of the training ground and other assets to directors. However, he also emphasised that new investment would be welcome. Given the ground’s proximity to the 2012 Olympics site, and new house building planned for the Thames Gateway, together with an excellent stadium and other facilities, the club has the potential to experience a revival in the right hands.
