Mayor of London Sadiq Khan is to set up a high-powered team to investigate what happened with the finances of the London Stadium, the new home of West Ham United.   Several independent companies have been approached to undertake the work.

Although West Ham’s experience at their new home has been a far from happy one, many consider that they obtained a sweetheart deal at the expense of the taxpayer.    The bill for transforming the stadium has risen by £50m more than previously announced.   It will cost £8m each year to remove supposedly retractable seats to make the stadium ready for athletics in the summer.

Khan wants to obtain better value for the taxpayer in the future, although that may not be easy, as presumably the deal is legally watertight.  Former mayor Boris Johnson will be asked to justify his actions in relation to the stadium.
