This enthusiasm for sacking managers comes at a cost. Should Mackay be sacked, he will be entitled to the full value of his contract which ends in 2016 and is worth £2.5m.

There is no doubt that the enhanced broadcast payments have made owners even more desperate to keep their teams in the Premier League. However, there has been a history of tensions between Tan and Mackay which have escalated in the last few days.

The Cardiff City Supporters’ Trust has long expressed is strong concern that Mackay was being undermined as manager.

Tan has made £37m in loans to the club, but he does charge seven per cent interest which is a good rate for him in current circumstances.
