League football the aim for Braintree?

It has been suggested that league football is the long-term unspoken aim for Braintree Town as the club plans for a new 6,000-seater stadium.   It has been indicated that planning permission would be given to build homes on the current Cressing Road location, helping to fund a move.   It is hoped that the new stadium will be ready in some five years’ time between 2016 and 2018.

However, the club face a short-term challenge.  A club that prides itself on its fianncial prudence has to find £175,000 by next March to upgrade their current home to meet the required Conference standard.

Essex is a prosperous area, but the two league clubs in the non-metropolitan part of the county, Colchester United and Southend United, have enjoyed mixed fortunes in the Football League.   Other population centres, particularly the county town of Chelmsford, have aspired to Football League status in the past.   Whether there is enough interest in the Braintree area to fill a 6,000 capacity stadium remains to be seen.
