It’s tough for managers in the Championship

At the weekend Charlton Athletic’s Belgian owners bid ‘au revoir’ to manager Bob Peeters after a poor run of results.   He was the 14th Championship manager to bite the dust this season.   In contrast only two managers in the Premiership have been forced out this season, although two have departed of their own accord.

Over the past three seasons managerial sackings in the Championship have far outnumbered those in the top flight.    From the turn of the millenium until 2012 there was little difference between the two divisions. The slightly higher number of sackings in the Championship virtually disappeared when adjustment was made for the fact that there are four more clubs in the second tier.

In the two and a half seasons since summer 2012, a total of 41 Championship managers have been sacked compared with 18 in the Premier League.   This reflects both the desire of owners to reach the promised land of the Premiership and the fear of dropping into the relative anonymity of League 1.
