Irish group in for Argyle

A mystery Irish consortium has been given preferential status to bid for Plymouth Argyle by administrator Brendan Guilfoyle.   The group – who are working with investment company BCK Wealth Management – is expected to pay a six-figure sum to secure exclusivity, putting paid to bids from Devon-based businessman James Brent (who was the front runner to buy the club) and property developer Paul Buttivant.

There is speculation that Ireland’s largest cinema chain, WardAnderson, might be linked with the bid.  The company’s joint owner Tom Anderson made a failed bid to buy Southampton in 2009.   The development opportunities around Home Park might well be appealing.  The Anderson family is said to be worth over £100m.

Last Friday 82 per cent of the club’s unsecured creditors voted to accept a Company Voluntary Arrangement.   However, Revenue and Customs are still considering whether to challenge the deal.
