Gate money declines in importance

Gate money was once a strong determinant of finishing position, but although they are well supported, Aston Villa, Sunderland and Newcastle United are all in danger of relegation.  Bournemouth, whose attendances are limited by stadium capacity, could well survive.

The proportion of revenue provided by gate money in the Premiership declined from 26 per cent in 2009-10 to 19 per cent in 2013-14.   However, Manchester United and Arsenal can still raise £100m from gate money during the course of a season.   Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are all planning to expand stadium capacity, in part to provide more lucratve corporate seats,
