Former Chester owner bids for Wrexham

Controversial former Chester City owner Stephen Vaughan is part of a consortium bidding to buy Conference side Wrexham.   Nearly a year ago Vaughan became the first owner of a professional club to fail the fit and proper person test at Chester.   He was disqualified from acting as a director of any company until November 2020 following his involvement in a £500,000 VAT fraud.

This means that he can hold no more than 30 per cent of shares in any club for another ten years – the exact figure he has offered to support the takeover.   Wrexham Supporters’ Trust have issued a statement saying they do not want Vaughan to be involved in any capacity.

Wrexham chairman Ian Roberts insists that he is still committed to the club.  However, it has been losing money since it came out of administration, £900,000 last year and £500,000 this year.  The difference is being made up by Wrexham Village.   Roberts claims that many local people support Everton and Liverpool.
