Half of Britain’s thirty richest sports players are footballers according to the latest rich list produced by The Times.   However, the top two places are taken by Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button from Formula 1.

Wayne Rooney comes in third with an estimated wealth of £60m.   Rio Ferdinand comes in fifth at £44m. He has been diversifying for several years, with interests in fashion labels, the #5 online magazine, White Chalk Music and Scion Films.

Steven Gerrard comes seventh equal with £37m.   Alongside him is Frank Lampard.   His clean-cut image has proved attractive to sponsors such as Pepsi and adidas.  One of his more surprising sidelines was a four book deal to produce stories aimed at children aged five and over.

Ryan Giggs is the other player to make the top ten.  His £80,000 a week salary did not make him one of the top earners at Old Traffiord, but he has long supplemented it with lucrative endorsement deals with the likes of Reebok and Quorn Burgers.

Three of the players in the top five are thus current or former Manchester United players.   Chelsea have another five former or current players in the top thirty, and Manchester City have two, but there are no representatives of Arsenal.
