The Football League chairman, Greg Clarke, has been on a tour of north-western clubs.   In this lengthy interview with the Lancashire Telegraph he reflects on what he found.   There is particular praise for Burnley, who announced a £14.4m profit recently, and the way in which they have handled their finances.   Certainly if there was an award for punching above your weight in football, Burnley would be in the running, while Barry Kilby would be on the short list for most astute chairman. 


However, he also talks about Burnley’s near neighbours Accrington Stanley who have faced a series of financial challenges and are now trying to meet a target of increasing their ground capacity to 5,000 by the end of the year.


He also talks broadly about football.   One of the most interesting points is that he hints that the Football League intends to introduce some kind of salary cap, although it won’t happen this season or next.
