Football is Britain’s oil gusher

‘Britain is to football what Saudi Arabia is to oil and we have a gusher coming out of London of fantastic football content,’ according to new News Corp chief executive Robert Thomson.

In yet another sign of the globalisation of football, Thomson said that News Corp’s UK papers were looking to repackage their football coverage for fans in Asia and Latin America. Quite what this will mean in practice is unclear. What do they want to know that is different from English fans, other than coverage of Latin American and (the relatively few) Asian players in the Premier League.
