The remarks made by Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore yesterday were seen as an endorsement of the partial boycott of the expensive tickets at the Emirates by Manchester City fans.  But what Scudamore was saying is that fans should make their feelings felt through the market mechanism.

The difficulty is that Arsenal were able to reallocate all the unsold tickets and secure a capacity crowd. Scudamore also drew attention to the tension between demands from fans for world class players and ticket prices.
