End game in Owls takeover

A possible takeover of Sheffield Wednesday by a Chinese consortium which has been on the horizon since last summer is likley to be resolved one way or another within the next fortnight.

Former Birmingham director and Hong Kong Sammy Yu, a former player and coach of the Hong Kong team, is on friendly terms with Owls owner Milan Mandaric.   Interest appeared to fade when the club appeared to be in some danger of relegation, but they are now almost certain to stay in the Championship.

A delegation of a dozen or more Chinese businessmen visited Hillsborough yesterday.   Mandaric is holding out for £30m which is arguably on the high side for a Championshi[p club, although he calculates he has spent over £20m.

It is, however, much cheaper than buying a Premiership club off the peg.   Belgian tycoon Roland Duchatelet recently paid an estimated £20m to add Charlton to his stable of clubs, although he was canny enough to build in a £4m relegation discount.
