A study by BRDC Continental suggests that Premiership clubs are losing valuable revenue by failing to maximise match day ticket sales, Not only are they losing money on the ticket sales, they are also depriving themselves of revenue from food and drink outlets and the sale of programmes. The two worst hit clubs are said to be Aston Villa, losing out on £7m a year, and Sunderland, losing £6.5m.

This type of revenue will become more important from the 2013/14 season when the Premier League’s new financial controls start working as money raised in this way can be spent on players. However, the report’s authors recognise that there is a difficult trade off between discounting to attract walk up trade and offending season ticket holders.
