Defeat sharpens Liverpool’s financial woes

Last night’s defeat at Wigan was another blow to Liverpool and casts doubt on whether the club can qualify for a Champions League place next season which is vital to their finances.   One might think that failure to make fourth place after the club was tipped as possible title winners would be curtains for the manager, but apparently they cannot afford to sack him.

In the longer run the new stadium in Stanley Park is vital to the club’s ability to continue to compete at the top level.  The club has a waiting list of tens of thousands for season tickets, but even more important in financial terms it needs to capture the corporate revenue it cannot obtain at Anfield.
